You can use entities.  Maybe something like this:

(setq org-entities-user ; can also use "\ "
      '(("space" "~" nil " " " " " " " ")))

Then the following:

  Mr.\space{}Henry Higgins.

exports as:

  Mr.~Henry Higgins.
