Hi Sean,

Welcome to the list!

This works for me.  I think there was a bug like this in a recent
release.  What version of org-mode are you using?

Mine exports as follows

* Test export
[[file:img/avi.gif]]

--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
...
<p><img src="img/avi.gif"  alt="img/avi.gif" />
</p>

Maybe try upgrading to the latest development snapshot of org?

I'm using Org-mode version 7.5 (release_7.5.115.g00134)
