completion-at-point default behavior

Sometimes I encounter a situation where I need to write something before a word/symbol, and I don't have any space between what I'm writing and the word right after the cursor. The completion-at-point function works so that not only does it take what is before my cursor, but it also tries to take what is after my cursor and uses the combined string to search for possible completion candidates, which gives me undesirable result (or a complete absence of it). Maybe it makes sense to add an optional parameter that allows changing such behavior? I haven't found anything specifically for this case in the source code.
