So, my understanding so far of this approach is...
1) create repeating diary entry for the required time and day of week
2) attach elisp to it that calls desired function, saves state, etc.
3) the appointment reminder system causes the diary entry to be display X
number of minutes before the appointment. This causes the attached elisp to be
executed.
