Just to be clear, I don't doubt the good faith of others, here.  When I
wrote about "the purpose of major-mode-remap-defaults" I meant it
literally, ascribing motivation to the variable, not to maintainers.
Sorry I wasn't clearer.

My intention was to make other maintainers, including he who wrote it,
aware of what was at stake.  There's a very old principle in Emacs not
to interfere in user set options.  That's what I see being violated
here.
