If you don't consider desktop.el useful and don't use it, then,
indeed, whether activities.el is a compatible extension of desktop.el
or a completely new package developed from ground up on a different
basis should be of no importance for you.  My worries are for people
who do use desktop.el and might also be interested in the features
offered by activities.el that are not currently present in desktop.el.
