I don't build programs myself other than Emacs, so I have not seen
this. Perhaps the ideal response would be a change in Automake to
inform users how to see what these commands really do.
Alas, I doubt we have anyone to do that.

I would like to, even though I fear there is a maintenance crisis there.
What exactly is "the autotools forum"?
