Thanks, very strange I have
setxkbmap -query
rules:      evdev
model:      pc105
layout:     us,us
variant:    ,intl

So  ä does not work in emacs, nor in konsole nor in thunderbird, but in
xterm  and in LibreOffice.

Very very odd
