That would be some work; it is not just creating a defvar, it is making sure it is used consistently everywhere (e.g., arbitrary chars would need quoting in the appropriate regular expressions). If there is a demonstrated need for it then it could be added as part of the code to satisfy that need. It does not sound urgent.
