Yes, it “works fine”, in the sense that we‘re used to its behavior. In that behavior, HT does not always stand exactly for itself; quite the contrary. (Even SP does not do that.) Insisting on philosophical grounds that every character must always stand exactly for itself would make Emacs less useful.
