I'd be happy to get the maintainers involved, but I don't have any idea
how to go about finding the out-of-tree back ends.  Help would be
appreciated.

I think shelve-stash will be dead easy.

You're the second person to bring up async operation.  I don't have
a clear idea of what that means.
