Reasonably modern environments should have zlib development
packages with pkg-config data (look for zlib.pc on your system),
so you can consider something like below:

PKG_CHECK_MODULES(ZLIB, zlib >= 1.2, HAVE_ZLIB=yes, HAVE_ZLIB=no)
