It looks like perl-mode now likes to replace -> with a glyph by
default. It is not a good idea.
And example where this does not work:
emacs -Q --daemon
In a terminal do:
emacsclient -t
C-x C-f perlfile.pl RET
The above will replace -> with a glyph for an arrow,
so the "perlfile.pl" buffer is unreadable, the glyph cannot be
displayed in a terminal and it shows up as a question mark.
