Not sure about "without checking out the branch", but I don't think
that's a big issue anyway.
As for the question _with_ checking out the branch, there are various
tools that allow you to display the DAG and hence let you see the split
and merge points between emacs-23 and trunk.
I have never needed this kind of info, so I don't know the
specifics, OTOH. Why do you ask?
