In what country is "avoid to" not too rarely encountered? ;-)
One hears that kind of thing in continental Europe, from non-native English
speakers. I always thought of it as a kind of faux ami: a direct
(mis-)translation.
The same thing happens with other verbs, besides "avoid". It's sometimes
difficult for those for whom English is a second or third language to keep track
of when the infinitive is called for.
