    autoconf, automake, and so on.  Actually, I heard people referring to
    the whole generation of configure scripts and Makefiles as `autohell'.

    Yes, it's ovbiously a criticism.

Then it is a vague and nonconstructive one.  Please stick to
constructive comments if you want to be helpful.

    Which means using the auto tools, be realistic.  Who writes configure
    scripts manually?

It is easy to write a configure script that is just a wrapper for
some other configuration mechanism.
