23.0.60; No font smoothing in inactive window status bars

My .emacs contains

 (set-default-font "Bitstream Vera Sans Mono-9.5")

All fonts are nicely smooth in most places, except in the status bars of
inactive windows, where they appear to be jaggy.

If Emacs crashed, and you have the Emacs process in the gdb debugger,
please include the output from the following gdb commands:
    `bt full' and `xbacktrace'.
If you would like to further debug the crash, please read the file
/usr/share/emacs/23.0.60/etc/DEBUG for instructions.
