    There is another inconvenience, one you may have noticed also -- upon 
visiting 
    the TAGS file emacs complains about its size and requires confirmation 
before
    continuing.

This is controlled by large-file-warning-threshold.  It would be ok to
create a separate such variable to apply to tags files only;
visit-tags-table could bind large-file-warning-threshold to that other
value.
