this is configurable (at X Windows start time), at least for certain
implementations. i use the following in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, e.g.:
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "DontZap" "true"
EndSection
i added this (other non-germaine options elided) specifically
to be able to use C-M-<backspace>.
