Hi Frank, if your favorite IRC channel is #emacs, then the fluctuation
can be explained by the fact that there now is an #xemacs channel as
well.

You might be overly "optimistic".

XEmacs is still getting features added which GNU Emacs is lacking,
along from the long-standing XEmacs package system.

bignums
and
modules
are just two that come to mind.
