I think this is a real bug; if the i command can't find an index, it
should signal an error before reading an argument.
Would someone like to fix it?

In Info I'm looking at
gnuplot
*******
* Menu:
* gnuplot::
* Commands::
* Graphical User Interfaces::
* Bugs::
and I hit i, Info-index.
Well, I am prompted and dutifully fill in the minibuffer, and
Ahahaha sucker, "No Index".
Why can't it just tell me up front instead of pulling the spiteful 3
shell game, as it can easily check before prompting me.
