I'd rather say that it seems best if .. does not cross file handler
boundaries.  But I am not entirely sure.  This is a knotty situation,
and neither choice seems entirely right, but it seems that there's a
stronger argument in favor of this approach: it permits constructs
that are impossible the other way.
