RMS, i just wanted to point out that:
once you are at the beginning of line already, invoking C-a yet once
again does nothing at all, by default... so one might as well add
funtionality to it---that it go to some place useful if it is already
at the beg-of-line.
In eshell, for instance, it seems esp. useful to have C-a toggle
between: beg-of-line and beg-of-user-prompt..

anyways, sorry for the blab..
maybe you don't like it for good reason----users who are used to
default behavior of C-a might get confused or inconvenienced:
for instance, a user may, without looking at the screen, press C-a and
expect to be at beg-of-line. But what if she was already at
beg-of-line? Surprise.. emacs has taken her somewhere else!..
