Reproduce it in the scratch buffer:
  
  M-x load-library mailabbrev RET
  M-x mail-abbrev-complete-alias RET

I think, calling mail-abbrev-make-syntax-table in the very beginning
of mail-abbrev-complete-alias fixes the problem.
