Follow-up Comment #1, bug #21600 (project duplicity):

I want to re-design the handling of archive dir completely, to be nothing but
a *cache* of the contents on the remote end, in order to avoid various weird
cases that crop up with its use.

I looked into this the other day but the archive-dir handling was a bit
entangled all over the place so I postponed it because I ended up dreaming up
a more significant design change that would entail various other things before
being able to address this particular issue.

But my take on it is that, although this particular problem can probably be
fixed without major changes if someone figures it out, it would be preferable
to re-factor things a bit and put a caching layer in front of backends (which
could then also be used more generally, such as to cache data files as well as
a 'speed of access' convenience, if the users wants).
