Follow-up Comment #8, bug #21686 (project duplicity):
The downside of this is that it would retain the dependency on backends
supporting get() to a file that already exists. But as you say, it's simple.
I will of course do whatever you prefer, or nothing. If you want me to
implement a workaround by using a dedicated directory I'll produce a patch to
make tempfile creation work like this (rather than the hack with tempfile).
The bit I feel is important is to have secure tempfile creation, in one way
or another.
