Follow-up Comment #5, bug #21686 (project duplicity):

So I would suggest that the nicest fix would be to change duplicity to always
use a temporary directory (securely created), and then download files into
that directory. This would remove any special cases such as this one, while
still being secure.

I'll have a look at making that change.
