This seems odd as I thought duplicity now natively supports b2 and how does my 
command line

/usr/bin/duplicity collection-status b2:

have knowledge of the b2sdk in particular?

current duplicity needs the b2sdk python module. see
https://gitlab.com/duplicity/duplicity/-/blob/master/duplicity/backends/b2backend.py#L77-109

any specific reason why you are hesitant to install it?
