Hi all

Replying to myself, I have found the reason for the performance hit in
recent versions. It seems related to the compression options given to
gpg: bzip2+level 9 is much to high. Reverting to zlib with default level
reduced backup time by a factor 2 (25 hours to ~ 13 hours).
