With that in place, it seems happy on rhel 3 with python 2.2 (once I've

That makes sense. RHEL 3 ships with only python 2.2, but as of Sunday, 
it's now into "maintenance support" only. So, I expect a lot of people 
will be upgrading their RHEL 3 boxes in the next 6-12 months, so it'll 
become less of an issue.

(RHEL 4 only has python 2.3, but at least it's pretty easy to rebuild the 
rpms of python 2.4 for it, and install them alongside 2.3)
