Let me know if that works or if you have other problems with 2.2.

With that in place, it seems happy on rhel 3 with python 2.2 (once I've made the usual tweak to the sftp command line, as required by the broken sftp that redhat ship with rhel3)

I know we do now, but going forward I'm not sure we want to support 2.2 any more. Python 2.2 is quite ancient and once we get past the current problem, may cause other problems, or keep us from advancing due to lack of features like this. However, until that happens, I'll apply the fix you supplied and hope for the best.

That makes sense. RHEL 3 ships with only python 2.2, but as of Sunday, it's now into "maintenance support" only. So, I expect a lot of people will be upgrading their RHEL 3 boxes in the next 6-12 months, so it'll become less of an issue.

(RHEL 4 only has python 2.3, but at least it's pretty easy to rebuild the rpms of python 2.4 for it, and install them alongside 2.3)
