Agreed, but I think that we would want it to be a separate project from 
duplicity itself that would involve related backup projects.  That way 
we could leverage more help.  There's another project that already uses 
something close to the proposed format.  When I find the message again, 
I'll post it.

Possibly, but its probably time for tar to be retired.  It's at least 30 
years old and probably has enough warts from backward compatibility to 
supply a whole gaggle of witches.  ;-)
