I think it is a good idea to start with a reasonably small
subproject. While there is a lot of big things in DotGNU that
need to be done, I'm sure that there will also be lots of small
things, too.
It's a challenge though in this early stage of DotGNU to point
out small things that need to be done. We're still talking
mainly about the big things.
I have one idea though... maybe you could write a sample
application for DotGNU that can (optionally, as soon as DotGNU
supports that) make use of distributed computing.
Such a sample application could be written in C# or in Java or
in one of the languages that can be compiled to Java bytecode
(for example Ada).
