TBH, the way you had it installed in your original post was fine and you might want to revert to that.
Sure it might have been 3.8 but if it's been packaged, the maintainer must have ensured it was fine and a known working stable version and it should work provided the right drivers.
So if you have the opportunity to go back to that, it's probably easier than trying to mix a packaged and source install ... especially if you're not very familiar with all the details of how this works.
