showing all search results, not only the first ten by default

hello,

when I search the directory for something -for example by looking in a 
category- I would like to have a quick overview.
I therefore find it unnecessarily complicated to have to click on 
"further results" because only 10 results are shown by default and then 
after this further change the search box values to 500 or so instead of 
10 (after having a bit understood how it works).
I don't see the point in seeing the results by 10  by 10..
