Details:

When inserting a set of tied semibreves, with the intent to have a sustained
note over 4 bars, i got to the second note, hit the tie command, and got not
only a duplicate of the note in the same bar, with the message in a popup
window:

"to use this function correctly, you need to give a duration."

I had already done so.
