Ben, i should have added i have all the dev files installed as well. (I took this as a given)

if you /compile/ denemo, having the libs is not enough: you need the C
development files of each used library, plus pkg-confg scripts.

For guile 1.8, this is given in the "guile-1.8-dev" debian package.

You will also need "-dev" packages of libgtk (and X11), libglib,
libaubio, libsamplerate, libfftw3.

If the denemo debian package matches the tarball version in terms of
build dependencies, you can intstall all build dependencies in one
command:        apt-get build-dep denemo

You can also install the "build-essential" package which provides a C
compiler and core development files.
