pty error using ddd

Hello,
I have ddd 3.3.1 installed and running on a Tru64 version 5.1 Alpha 
ES40.  When users run ddd they get the following error message 
*sometimes* but not always.   I have tried recompiling but I think the 
problem is maybe a resource somewhere on the machine but I cant put my 
finger on it.  I am hoping someone can help me out.

> ddd
gdb: cannot open master pty:  No such file or directory
gdb: communication setup failed

I know there is a master pty in /dev and there are slaves but beyond 
that dont know where to begin with this error......
