Thinking about it again, using man format for the options would make the
output much longer, e.g. for join this would make ~80 lines instead of
just 44.  While we have a pager via man, such long output may be disturbing
for small terminals.
It seems the manually maintained formatting is already optimal
regarding both readability and vertical+horizontal space use.
I'm not sure how we could get something better.

Given that we don't want to create excessive work for our translators (due
to larger changes in the translatable strings), I tend to say that we
should only improve the indentation of --help and --version, if at all.
