I will say right now that backwards compatibility, specifically that existing tuples remain unchanged as much as possible (blatantly incorrect tuples such as *-windows-gnu for MinGW excepted) is an absolute requirement here.
Existing code expects the existing strings. Those must be preserved. -- Jacob
