There is simply nothing to `encode'. The Type1 fonts created by
fontforge are to be used as-is.

Ah, I forgot that. So yes, there is another approach (which is
definitely simpler) for dvips – to be ultimately followed by a call to
ghostscript – that doesn't need explicit Type1 subfonts.
