>From here it's a two-hour journey north to a Spanish hamlet where English is the official language. All around me, less fortunate participants struggled to make themselves understood to their Spanish students. Visit the area, and you are immediately struck by how few sunburnt Brits are wandering around.
Secondly, what is the property to be used for?
The local agents are few on the ground; they're part of the community and wish to stay so.
Other topics almost invariably covered the weather, the food, and how nice Bilbao is. The major Costa Del Sol agents are now in towns such as Loja, Comares and Antequera; soon they'll be in Espejo and Cordoba.
Sometimes, Ms Higgins said, it can take three or four years before these bills are sent to new properties. Of course, the house takes up a certain footprint, but you would generally not choose to landscape all of the remaining land. From then on a suspiciously steady stream of walkers made the monotonous trek around the eastern mountain path. In some circumstances, this has led to the seizure of the property. A good deal of clients were not fully aware of the constraints of the LRAU and believed it applied to the Costas in general.
And as one local estate agent said to me, the Brits just don't seem to realise it's there. Not to mention being a rare chance to experience an authentic inter-generational community. While finding great properties is easy, finding out how to buy them is often confusing and difficult.
A Project Manager is there to manage your project, your concerns, your doubts and of course your budget. Trooping on to the bus, the Anglos - consisting of Australians, Americans, Canadians, and myself as sole Brit - were immediately assigned to nervous-looking Spaniards for the duration of the journey.
Outside of the scheduled conversations the program also organises group activities, plays, and other presentations.
When it comes to the Valencian region, the LRAU has a certain shelf life.
How am I going to keep up with the gardening?
And as one local estate agent said to me, the Brits just don't seem to realise it's there. I'm already signed up. Over the past three years, travel companies have reported a decline in bookings to Spain in favour of cheaper destinations such as Greece and Turkey.
But the official language is English, and no Spanish is allowed, not even for a phone call home. The local agents are few on the ground; they're part of the community and wish to stay so. So meals, activities, and the accommodation aim to be highly typical of the surrounding area.
Visit the area, and you are immediately struck by how few sunburnt Brits are wandering around. Other entertainments include several parties, group trips to nearby archaeological sites of interest, and native Sorian entertainments. Fluent English speakers are invited to stay for free - with the small proviso that they share their company with Spanish residents.
Five years ago the campo, or countryside, was the domain of the intrepid foreigner - cheap, but unfashionable.
He is responsible for the project from inception to completion ensuring your standards of time and quality are met. The sierras of Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama make up a vast natural park.
And despite our markedly different backgrounds, it really became a tight-knit group.
There is a huge cost saving to be realised through purchasing a plot of land and then self-building in southern Spain.
In addition, in Alhama you're not going to get the hard sell.
So for many, the days of Andalucia as an attractive property buying market are long gone - or are they?
However, far flung destinations such as Australia, Canada and New Zealand are also increasing in popularity.
The entire complex is set up to showcase the culture of Soria - with the small exception of the native dialect. For the language students, it was six hours of intensive conversation daily, being exposed to a range of accents, dialects, and personalities.
