I like the idea of simplifying things. I suggest just doing one tool
at first and seeing how the feedback goes.
Maybe diffutils? "diff --help" would be good exercise. If you're
interested in diffutils I suggest the latest alpha version 2.8.4,
canonically at <ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/diffutils/> but that site is
down so you might try the mirror at
<ftp://linux-rep.fnal.gov/pub/mirrors/gnu/alpha/diffutils/>.
