I don't believe there is "a need for a concerted change in some js/classes".

The patch I sent for the js/classes depends on this change to the node 
structure,
but only in a trivial way (there is a css rule that checks for the node class),
and not vice versa.  I tried your patch without the js and it's fine (except
for the minor spacing issue my js patch fixes.)
