Just for the clarity of my previous statement : what caused the
problem is that one of the tools configured was set to the command ':'
which is a bash builtin defined as follows in (info "(bash) Bourne
Shell Builtins") :

`:    (a colon)'
          : [ARGUMENTS]
     Do nothing beyond expanding ARGUMENTS and performing redirections.
     The return status is zero.

>From the top of my head I think that this is msgmerge that was
configured as ':'. Anyway in the current Makefile I have the correct
settings.
