I thought about that, but decided it might lead to unnecessary
complications. For example, IIRC, `insert' is used when expanding
macros, in which case you might not want to remove the blanks until
the results of the expansion are processed (in a possibly recursive
way).
Removing where we output, while seemingly less clean, is guaranteed to
produce correct results.
That said, it's up to you, of course.
