They fail in the sense that when used as recommended by people in
this discussion, the data they provide are not accurate.

diff -p doesn't claim to provide that information.
It provides what it provides, but that is not exactly what we need here.

Perhaps it is the same for git.

Maybe neither program has a _bug_, strictly speaking.
But that question is not crucial.

What matters here is that that method doesn't give reliable data for
the job we need to do.
