Thanks for the reply. Are you referring to modelines inside the README itself?

In my modest opinion, it's much better to let the extension carry the filetype, because otherwise no one will use the mentioned markup language. There is also an aesthetic issue regarding the modlines. For example, in VIM i would set:

/* vim : set ft=markdown : */

But then this line would be highlighted because it's enclosed by '*'.

Could you please reconsider the *.md file extension?
