She could not help laughing herself sometimes. It
was in my pocket a minute ago, I mumbled. It was September after all,the middle of
September, and past six in the evening. But now, she said, artists had come here. It
flattered him; snubbed as he had been, it soothed him that Mrs Ramsayshould tell him
this. Hehimself had paid his own way since he was thirteen.
As for her littlebag, might he not carry that? A
fireman on a ladder was pouring water on to theroof. And to those words, what
meaning attached, afterall?
The roof disappeared with a roar and in a stormof
sparks. It lodged now in the fork of a pear tree, for they hadreached the
orchard.
A fireman on a ladder was pouring water on to
theroof. As I watched, the back wall of the house crashed inwards and theroof
subsided a foot. It was a large family, nine brothers and sisters, and his father
was aworking man. She wouldnot give a flower to the gentleman as the nursemaid told
her. Theres only one wooden joist thatsnot burnt through.
We crowded back on to the verandas of the opposite
terrace.
It was September after all,the middle of September,
and past six in the evening. The upper floor had burnt through and fallen, and the
balcony was acentre of flame. A window burst outwards andthe glass tinkled across
the road.
But it was with difficulty that she took her eyes
off her picture.
A piece of it lodged at my feet andIpicked it up.
Looks as if theyre too late to save the joint, said Woggo, who wasstanding behind
me.
No, no, she said, she always carried
THATherself.
He was such amiserable specimen, the children said,
all humps and hollows.
She wished they would both leave her andJames alone
and go on talking. I suppose theydidnt want to frighten me with the truth. Mary and
he will be married as soon as they can arrange it and Georgeis going back to his
farm.
Something to do with a nervous breakdown. DEAR
SIR,I should be greatly obliged if you would put this request before theproper
authorities. So sheturned with a sigh and said, Would it bore you to come with me,Mr
Tansley?
