I have often wanted that as well.  HP-UX also prints the pid of the
login process.

If you decide to pursue this further please send any souce code
patches to the list.

BTW...  No one can keep track of what versions different groups like
Redhat, Debian, Caldera, Mandrake, SuSE, VA, Gentoo, etc. distribute.
Please include the real GNU version number.  In this case it did not
matter since they are all the same.  But if it does matter then the
version of the distribution is really not too significant.
