Basename as shell script

Hi, my name is Roberto Simoni. I send this mail to notify to you that I've 
found on a Solaris SPARC a shell script called "basename". This is the program 
basename that you have as a compiled program. I know that probably you have 
already it, but can i make a question ? Why you have this program in C and you 
haven't used the AT&T shell script ?
